Center for eHealth Innovation and Process Transformation

The Center for eHealth Innovation and Process Transformation at WPI is an interdisciplinary health care research center. The goal of the center is to use and expand engineering, management, and information technology approaches to improve health care delivery processes.

The Center was started in early 2009 by four founding faculty members from WPI's Department of Management and Department of Mechanical Engineering – Isa Bar-On, Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Sharon Johnson, Associate Professor of Industrial Engineering, Diane Strong, Professor of Management Information Systems, and Bengisu Tulu, Assistant Professor of Management Information Systems – who together form the executive council governing the Center. Since then, the Center was grown to include a number of engineering, science, medical, and management researchers.

The Center's first project, supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation, is a 3-year international study of electronic medical records as an agent of change in the US, Canada and Israel. The Center cooperates on this project with Fallon Clinic and UMass Memorial Health Care, two health care organizations in central Massachusetts.

Additional projects are planned or underway including integrating industrial engineering approaches into the design of health care delivery processes and developing and testing mobile telehealth solutions. Each project is conducted in cooperation with one or more clinic partners, such as the New England Veterans Affairs Health System, to ensure that the Center is studying topics and developing approaches that are of practical use in health care organizations. The Center also cooperates with other research organizations at WPI, such as WPI's Center on Untethered Healthcare and WPI's Bioengineering Institute (BEI), and elsewhere, such the New England Healthcare Engineering Partnership.
