Admissions

Admission to WPI's Graduate Management Programs is competitive. In keeping with our focus on the Management of Technology, we look for candidates that have a high likelihood of success in a challenging, technology-focused management program, based on their academic and professional records. We also look for candidates whose aspirations are in line with the focus of the specific program to which they are applying.

Applicants should have the analytic aptitude and academic preparation necessary to complete a technology-oriented management program. This includes a minimum of three semesters of college-level math or two semesters of college-level calculus. Applicants are also required to have an understanding of computer systems.

Application Procedures

Applicants must have earned the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor's degree to be considered for admission. Admission decisions are based upon all of the information required from the applicant, including:

The GRE may be substituted for applications to the Master of Science and Certificate Programs. The GMAT is required for all MBA applications. WPI requires a minimum score of 500 on the GMAT for consideration to the MBA program. The minimum required GRE score for consideration to Master of Science and Certificate Programs is 1000 (combination of Quantitative and Verbal categories). Please note that meeting minimum score requirements is not a guarantee of admission.

Full-time applicants whose native language is not English and who have not earned a degree from an institution where the language of instruction is English are required to submit official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) scores.   Any international applicant seeking to attend WPI on an F-1 student visa must submit either TOEFL or IELTS scores as required for the issuance of the Form I-20.  WPI requires a minimum score of 550 on the paper-based TOEFL, 213 on the computer-based TOEFL, or 79-80 on the internet-based TOEFL.  The minimum score requirement for the IELTS is 6.5.

A $70.00 non-refundable application fee is also required (waived for WPI alumni and current students).  Pay online.

For admitted students, a non-refundable tuition deposit of $500 is required to confirm your admission to WPI. Pay online.

Admission Deadlines

Graduate Management Programs admits students for both fall (September) and spring (January) terms. Full-time and part-time admission to the Technology MBA program is available in either term. Full-time admission to any Master of Science program in the Department of Management is only available in the fall term due to scheduling considerations. Part-time students may enter any Master of Science program in either term.

Applications are evaluated on a rolling basis as soon as all required materials have been received. We would advise applicants to have all of the documentation submitted by the following deadlines for the term of their choice:

Fall admission:

Spring admission:

Applicants who anticipate having application materials and supporting documentation arrive after these dates should contact the Graduate Management Programs Office for advice.

ESL (English as a Second Language) Course

International students who do not pass the WPI Speak Test, administered during your first week on campus, will be required to enroll in an ESL course during their first semester at WPI.  Cost of this non-credit course is approximately $550.  Students with Graduate Assistantships may record the hours spent in the ESL course as worked GA hours, thus more than covering the cost of the course.

Course Registration For Non-matriculating Students

The Department of Management permits students to take up to two graduate management courses prior to being admitted to the MBA, MSIT, MSMTI, or MSODL programs by demonstrating a bachelor's degree and an overall 3.0 (or equivalent) undergraduate grade point average or a completed graduate degree from an accredited university. This requirement must be met with an official transcript submitted to the Office of Graduate Management Programs prior to registering for the first course(s).
